Hi Christina!

Well, I’ll tell Dexter that you said Hi!    It’s not a good day for Dexter because it’s rainy and chilly.  He can’t hang out in the backyard or on the front porch.  He’s sort of stuck in the house all day, except for his morning and evening walks.  Oh, and I took him to a bakery this morning, and they gave him a biscotti (an Italian cookie).  Dexter loves biscotti!  They’re nice and crunchy!

Hi Elias,

Aww, I do, too!  Sparky was such a wonderful dog.  But she lived a long life (13 years!) and had so many friends!  I have so many happy memories of Sparky, so when I think about her it always makes me smile, remembering all the good times we had together!  But I wish Sparky was around to visit you and all of your classmates.  I’m sure she would have liked giving out lots of doggie kisses!

hi Rick when Dexter has his free time what does he do..?

Wow!  What a great question!  Well, Dexter likes going on walks around the neighborhood, but what he likes best is laying on his bed on the front porch and watching everyone go by (and also barking at the mailman!), sort of like in his book “Mr. Dexter’s Neighborhood,” where Dexter is with Speedy on the front porch looking out the front door.  Oh, and Dexter loves getting dog biscuits to eat, and he also enjoys hanging out in the back yard when I’m out there working in the garden!

When did sparky had cancer

Hi Adriel,

Sparky probably developed cancer in the last year of her life, when she was 12 years old.  And unfortunately, it made it very sick near the end of her life.  However, she still felt well enough to visit schools!  The last time she visited a school was at the end of summer in June 2011.  She passed away late that summer in September.  And she was very happy during that school visit.  It was held in a big auditorium, and I remember Sparky running down the aisle in the auditorium, and all the kids were calling her name, Sparky! Sparky!

Hi Evan,

Well, not really.  I did write “Sparky’s Big Race,” where Speedy, Maggie and Sparky have a race down the street (Speedy wins!).  But, of course, I used my imagination to write that book.  It wasn’t a true story (that means it was a fiction book; if it was a true story, like “Mr. Dexter’s Neighborhood,” that would be a non-fiction book).  If I actually put Speedy, Maggie and Sparky in a race, they’d never make it to the finish line!  They’d be running (or walking, in Speedy’s case) all over the place!

I’d love to have Sparky back, too.   I’m sure Sparky and Dexter would be good friends.  And wouldn’t that be great if they could both visit Black Rock School at the same time?!  But luckily Sparky can live on in her books and all her pictures!
